Early signs of termites in Hyderabad homes
Mud tubes, hollow wood, and discarded wings — what to check before the monsoon.
Hyderabad’s warm climate and monsoon moisture give subterranean termites plenty of cover. They rarely announce themselves with a dramatic swarm in the living room. More often, they work quietly inside skirting, door frames, and wooden cabinets until the damage is expensive. Catching the early signs saves structure — and money — especially in apartments and independent houses around Miyapur, Hafeezpet, Kondapur, and the wider west Hyderabad belt.
Termites need three things: cellulose (wood and wood products), moisture, and a route from the soil or a damp wall into the timber. Hyderabad’s pre-monsoon humidity and post-rain dampness create ideal conditions under tiles, near bathrooms, and along external walls that stay shaded. If you own or rent a home here, a short seasonal walk-through is worth more than waiting for a major repair.
Mud tubes on skirting or foundation
Thin soil tunnels along walls, columns, or the edge of the floor are a classic marker of subterranean termites. Workers build these tubes to travel between the nest and the wood while staying protected from light and dry air. You may notice them behind washing machines, under kitchen cabinets, along the compound wall, or where the building meets the soil in a villa.
Do not break every tube and assume the problem is gone. Breaking a tube can temporarily disrupt their path, but the colony usually rebuilds. Note where you saw them, take a clear photo, and book an inspection. A proper treatment plan targets the colony and the timber under risk, not only the visible tunnel.
Hollow-sounding wood
Tap skirting boards, door frames, window jambs, and the lower shelves of cupboards. Healthy wood sounds solid. Wood that has been eaten from the inside often returns a papery or hollow echo. In severe cases, the surface paint still looks fine while the core is honeycombed. Cupboard backs, bed frames, and wooden false ceilings can hide the same pattern.
In Hyderabad apartments, termite entry often follows plumbing chases and expansion joints. If one flat has activity, neighbours on the same stack sometimes see related signs later. Early reporting helps the building manage the issue as a whole rather than flat by flat after the fact.
Discarded wings after rain
After a spell of rain, winged termites (swarmers) leave the colony to start new nests. They are attracted to light, so you may find piles of discarded wings on window sills, under porch lights, or near balcony doors. The insects themselves look a little like flying ants, but termite swarmers have a more uniform waist and wings of similar length.
A single swarm does not always mean your furniture is already compromised — but it does mean colonies are active nearby. Treat it as a prompt to check skirting, store rooms, and any timber touching damp walls. Monsoon season is when many Hyderabad households first notice the problem; acting before peak humidity is wiser than waiting for August.
Other clues worth a second look
Look for blistered or buckled paint on wooden surfaces, tiny piles of what looks like sand or frass near timber joints, and doors that suddenly stick because frames have swollen or weakened. In bathrooms and utility areas, persistent damp patches behind tiles can feed termite activity even when the room looks dry on the surface.
Gardens and outdoor wood — pergolas, fencing, spare plywood — can also host colonies that later move toward the house. Keep timber off direct soil contact where you can, and clear leaf litter against the foundation after heavy rain.
What to do next in Hyderabad
If you spot two or more of these signs, schedule a professional inspection rather than buying a retail spray and hoping for the best. Surface sprays do not stop a subterranean colony. Our termite treatment is priced by the size of the home and includes a five-year free visit: if termites return within five years on a treated job, the follow-up visit is free under the published warranty terms.
Share your BHK or bungalow size, area, and a photo of the signs when you book. That helps us confirm the right approach before we arrive. Published tariffs start from the 1 BHK rate and scale with floor area for larger homes and bungalows.
